Weekend River Report

The cold front that swept through the area on Friday has past from west to east, leaving drier and cooler condtions for the weekend.

Inflows to the Highland Lakes are slightly elevated due to the rainfall, and most small streams are flowing at minimal levels.  Lake Buchanan rose slightly on Friday, and there are no releases scheduled at Buchanan Dam this weekend.  Lake Travis rose about 4-5 inches on Friday.  Minimal releases may be made from Lake Travis this weekend to satisfy municipal demands for the City of Austin.  The temperature at the surface of Lake Travis is 78 degrees.

As of October 9 at 5:00 pm, the level of Lake Buchanan was 990.84 feet above mean sea level (ft msl), which is about 20.8 feet below its historic October average of 1,011.66 ft msl.  The level of Lake Travis was 630.96 ft msl, which is about 35.7 feet below its historic September average of 666.61 ft msl.  The total combined storage in the Highland Lakes two water storage reservoirs, lakes Buchanan and Travis, is 807,414 acre-feet (ac-ft), or 40 percent of capacity.

The Highland Lakes provide water for irrigation, municipal, industrial and environmental needs around the Highland Lakes and along the lower river from Tom Miller Dam to Matagorda Bay.  Only significant rainfall will replenish the water consumed from the lakes, released for downstream needs and lost to evaporation.
LCRA is releasing water from the Highland Lakes to meet municipal, industrial, power generation, and environmental needs.
