Jet boats and Chickens

How many of you guys are raising chickens??

We were at Gebo's today and they are selling baby chicks for $1.58 and my daughter wants one badly. As a city boy who grew up on the beaches of South Florida, I have no idea how to raise these things. Are they expensive and difficult to raise?

The city of McKinney says we can have up to 15 hens and no roosters in the city limits.

What do ya think??

Pretty easy.  Have a coop and feed and water.  Get laying hens no rooster.  Roosters may flog you daughter with his spurs.

Okay, sounds easy enough. Where in the back yard should I build a coop?? should it be out of the sun?? What about in weather extremes like summer and winter, what do you do with them during those times??

I'll tell you how to take care of a chicken.  You throw it in the back yard and then run around in boots until you step on it and kill it.  There ya go.  All taken care of.  :smile30:

same old Easter sales thing been going on for 30 odd years ... used to be rabbits til chicken farms started crankin out chicks to resupply the layin hens as they slowed down ... poor rabbits couldn't keep up ... Bad Idea !  the pain you see on her face when you say "No" will in no way compete with her pain when it keels over or a cat or dog gets it ... been there done that it sucked ... all 6 times ...

My way is better. She can laugh about you running around in boots and you can act like it was an accident. Problem solved before she gets too attached.  LOL.  (I hope she isn't reading this LOL.)

If that was my daughter I would buy anything she wants.  As far as chickens, we have always had chickens until about four years ago.  You have to keep those chicks indoors with a light bulb to keep them warm until they get bigger.  Buy chick mash and medicine for their water.  Get about a half a dozen if you don't want to work hard.    When they get bigger start putting together a roost and some nests.  Hens like to share nests, so you don't need one for each hen.  That other guy is right about roosters.  With a little girl running around in the back, you don't want a rooster yet.  Having one helps the hens lay more regular if you are really counting on the eggs.  They roosters I had would keep dogs and cats away also.  If your chicks start becoming roosters, then eat them.  If you get tired of them they are easy to give away.  I used to give my extra roosters away.

We had a yard bird when we lived in AZ, We just let her run loose in the yard till she was big enough to fit on the grill. I think we spent about $15 on feed while we had her and in the end wasn't that good for eating. Probably cause she would get some good excersize between the kids and the chihuahua. That $15 would have bought some mighty good grillin pieces. When she was done cookin I was the only one that partook in the feast as everyone else had a hard time chowing down on her. Bottom line, if you plan on eating her, DON'T give her a name!

That was one chicken in a fenced off area of our yard and she was a mess. I couldn't imagine 15 of those little bastards crapping all over the place.

There's my two cents for you.

Man, I love the responses.

As for the roosters...I don't want a rooster, no way. Also, don't want 15 of those things too.....that's the max that having a chicken in the McKinney city limits will allow......but we are only looking at getting two of them. We have a pretty large Guinea pig gage we can keep them in until they get bigger....in the meantime I can build a small sized coup for them. Raising chickens doesn't seem to be to difficult of a job.
