That definitely sounds like a set up problem to me. 

I'd say your crew set up the boat and motor to well, (It can't be the driver) and it just worked to good.
What you need is just a little stumble in that take off part.

It's a tower malfunction, I can buy that.  Did they change the countdown clock for this year?  Maybe they bought a Chinese clock and it uses metric timing.
